Saudi Arabia Launches Third Phase of Major Road Corridor Developments in Riyadh with Investments Exceeding SR8 Billion
Saudi Arabia has begun implementing the third phase of major road corridor development projects in Riyadh, with total investments exceeding SR8 billion. The projects are scheduled to be delivered over a three- to four-year period and form part of a comprehensive programme to modernise the capital’s transport infrastructure and enhance traffic efficiency across key urban routes, in line with the city’s rapid population and urban growth.
Upgrading Key Arterial Roads to Increase Capacity
The new phase includes the development of Jeddah Road, spanning 29 kilometres, with the construction of 14 bridges and an expansion to five traffic lanes. The project aims to significantly increase capacity along one of Riyadh’s busiest corridors, improving traffic flow and reducing daily commute times.
The programme also covers the upgrade of Taif Road over 15 kilometres, featuring the construction of four bridges and an expansion to four lanes, supporting smoother vehicle movement and stronger connectivity between residential districts and surrounding areas.
Advanced Engineering Solutions to Reduce Congestion
Among the most prominent projects is the development of Thumamah Road, extending over eight kilometres, and including three bridges and three tunnels. These engineering solutions are designed to enhance network connectivity, eliminate traffic bottlenecks, and improve overall road safety.
In addition, King Abdulaziz Road will be upgraded across 4.7 kilometres, incorporating the construction of four bridges, while Othman bin Affan Road will undergo improvements along 4.3 kilometres, with the addition of seven bridges. These upgrades are expected to significantly enhance the performance and capacity of these vital urban routes.
Improving Mobility and Quality of Life
Once completed, the projects are expected to deliver a substantial improvement in mobility, road safety, and travel efficiency across Riyadh’s expanding road network. The developments will help reduce congestion, strengthen connectivity between residential and commercial areas, and support economic and service-related activities throughout the capital.
Aligned with National Development Goals
These road infrastructure projects align with the objectives of Vision 2030, which prioritises sustainable urban development, smart city planning, and enhanced quality of life. Investment in modern road networks is considered a core pillar in supporting long-term economic growth and positioning Riyadh as one of the region’s most efficient and liveable cities.
